Sarojini Naidu As An Inspiration
Sarojini Naidu was an Indian political activist, freedom fighter, and poetess. 2022 marks her 143rd birth anniversary. A prominent figure in India’s fight for independence from British rule, Naidu’s nationalistic work as a poet won her the title of Nightingale of India. She played a major role in establishing the Women’s Indian Association (WIA) in 1917. Naidu again went back to England in 1919 to advocate for freedom from the tyrannical British rule. She came back to India and joined Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha Movement. Sarojini Naidu, along with other freedom fighters played a major role in Civil Disobedience and Quit India Movement.
She inspired women all across the country to step out of their houses and take part in the nation’s quest to attain Independence. Her anti-British activity brought her several prison sentences (1930, 1932, and 1942–43).
She accompanied Gandhi to London for the inconclusive second session of the Round Table Conference for Indian–British cooperation (1931). Upon the outbreak of World War II, she supported the Congress Party’s policies. In 1947 she became governor of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), a post she retained until her death. She was a great poetess, her works are published, she wrote many poems, She was also in the drafting committee of the constitution of India. Patriotism, women empowerment, great poetess, first woman president of the national congress, freedom fighter are some of the inspiration qualities she gave to the nation.
