HOW TO PREVENT FOOD WASTAGE

Preventing food waste benefits individuals in many ways saving Time, Money, and Energy and also saves natural and environmental resources which, also results in improving a person’s eating habits

Here are few ways to prevent food wastage.

  • Developing Habits: The first step towards prevention wastage is developing habits of finishing the food that is served in plate.
  • Act wisely: If you are at a hotel one must not order to show ones status, one should not take in plate if it is not needed. Example if u don’t eat chutney with idly you must not take it even though if it is part of your order.
  • Gardening: When kids grow vegetables, kids eat vegetables. They will appreciate the hardWork that goes into growing food and likely waste less of it.
  • Cooking: If kids learn to cook, they can help reduce food waste at home. ..
  • Wastage at Marriage and Function: It is the main and must place where food wastage is high.The variety of food items should be limited, food items should be of all age groups.so that more food wastage be prevented.
  • Buffet system/Self-service: By applying this system people will take food as per their requirement.
  • Gracefully accept the food that is cooked/ served: Having too many tantrums on the food that is prepared irrespective of taste, texture, and choices may eventually lead to discarding food. Always develop the habit of praying before eating, appreciating the effort that goes into preparing the food and practise mindful eating, take less than what is required and enjoy eat bite and try finishing your food that is on your plate.
  • Cook Need fully: Make a routine habit to check what is leftover and plan well in advance to cook food mindfully sensing the required food quantity.
  • Buy Less: Perishable foods which have low shelf life should be purchased on a requirement basis. Non-Perishable foods can be brought in large quantity keeping in mind.
  • Storing Food sense: Dry Pulses should be mildly heated and cooled properly so as moisture goes away to prevent rodents .Never use wet hands while taking out dry pulses n cereals from containers.
  • Reuse of Leftovers: Appealingly reuse your leftover food, to reduce wastage and keep your fridge tidy from unwanted storage.Example: If there are leftover Dal, Rice, veggie, then mix them and to it add flour and some spices and make Paratha out of it .which becomes Best from left .
  • Preserving: When there are excess foods present then required quantity, can be preserved.

For Example Green Leafy Vegetables can be sundried and stored in packed containers or also can be which almost retains 80 to 90% of its freshness .OR also can be stir-fried dry its water content in an open pan and then stored in the freezer.

Leftover rotis can be deep-fried in small size portion and used as crunchy snacks

Sometimes one or two veggies are left and are not needed they can be cut and can be kept in the freezer.

  • When fresh vegetables are brought, one must make sure that the older ones are kept in first order to use them first to avoid wastage Example: The older onions should be kept in front or on top of fresh ones.
  • Sour buttermilk or Yoghurt can be used to make Dhokla or Appam instead of discarding it.
